Helpful Resources for Law Students

The beginning of September means that most law students are either heading back to class, or beginning their legal studies. The law school workload is undeniably intense, and HeinOnline is here to help. In addition to being the world's largest image-based government document and legal research database, HeinOnline also features fully searchable content and a wealth of tools to improve the legal research experience. It's a favorite resource among law librarians, professors, students, and other legal professionals. The following is just a snapshot of the various help materials available to all HeinOnline users.

1. HeinOnline's Help Video Series

In order to make HeinOnline even more user-friendly, a series of videos has been created highlighting major features and areas of the database. Two videos especially recommended are What Is HeinOnline? and our newest video, HeinOnline Welcome Page.

Check out this blog post or the HeinOnline YouTube Channel for more videos on searching, tools, and more.

2. Help and Training Guides

The HeinOnline support team has created a library of downloadable training guides. The Comprehensive User's Guide and Getting Started in HeinOnline are excellent resources for both new users and those looking for an extra edge as they utilize HeinOnline's massive amount of content and helpful features. Searching 101 will introduce users to the search syntax and search tools available in HeinOnline, while the MyHein User's Guide will help anyone with access to HeinOnline set up their own personal research accounts.

3. This List of Books

This blog post was published in late June, offering summer reading recommendations to future or current legal scholars. In addition to creating HeinOnline, William S. Hein & Co., Inc. has been a respected publisher and distributor of printed legal materials for more than 60 years. Among the hundreds of books published by Hein are these titles, which are geared toward current or future legal scholars:

a. 1000 Days to the Bar: But the Practice of Law Begins Now! 2nd edition, by Dennis J. Tonsing

This is a powerful, accessible, and practical book that breaks law school learning strategies into understandable and logical steps that maximize the effect of students’ study efforts. This book explicitly ties those learning strategies to the strategies practicing lawyers use to understand, analyze and apply legal concepts in the real-life representation of their clients. Students who employ its methods not only improve their law school performances and increase their chances of passing the bar on their first try, but they also come to understand the practical implications of their hard work for the transition into the real world of practice, where clients entrust to lawyers the protection of their rights, property, liberties, sometimes even their lives. In other words, students will learn how to practice law while pursuing success in studying law. This book is available for $28.95 here or at amazon.com.

b. Acing Your First Year of Law School: The Ten Steps to Success You Won't Learn in Class 2nd edition, by Henry S. Noyes and Shana Connell Noyes

First published in 1999, this book has gone on to become one of the best-selling law school preparation books of all time. It has been recommended by the pre-law advisory offices of several universities, by law school admissions consultant services, and by law school student organizations. Order your copy for $22.00 here or on amazon.com.

c. User's Guide to the Bluebook Revised for the 20th Edition, by Alan L. Dworsky

This User’s Guide is written for practitioners (law students, law clerks, lawyers, legal assistants and paralegals), and is designed to make the task of mastering citation form as easy and painless as possible. To help alleviate the obstacles faced when using proper citation form, this text is set up as a how-to manual with a step-by-step approach to learning the basic skills of citation. It also includes the numbers of the relevant Bluebook rules under most chapter subheadings for easy reference when more information is needed. This book is available for $17.95 here or at amazon.com.

d. Little Book on Legal Writing 2nd edition, by Alan L. Dworsky

This book allows both law and paralegal students to dramatically improve legal writing skills with minimum effort. It's geared toward the type of writing first-year law students learn in a standard legal writing course: memorandums and briefs. However, the advice in this book applies to other kinds of legal writing as well, including contracts and pleadings.  Order your copy here or at amazon.com for $12.95.

e. Little Book on Oral Argument by Alan L. Dworsky

This title is specifically designed for law students and lawyers who wish to improve their oral argument skills. It begins with chapters on nervousness, preparation, and delivery; later, it addresses the core theme of oral argument: how one interacts with an audience. Additional chapters deal with style, substance, structure, questions, rebuttal, and the psychology of persuasion. This work is available for $11.95 here or on amazon.com.

4.   This Blog Post on Cite-Checking

Cite-checking is one of the most tedious but necessary parts of the legal publishing process. For those students who are on law review, using HeinOnline's image-based material is as authoritative as retrieving and reviewing print copies of the same documents. Learn how to find material in HeinOnline and use search tools to help verify citations.

5. The HeinOnline Support Team

A team of HeinOnline experts is available by phone at (800) 277-6995, via email, and by live chat to answer questions about searching and navigating within HeinOnline. Team members are available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Eastern Time.
