Congressional Hearings in HeinOnline

Congressional Hearings, the principal formal method by which Congressional committees collect and analyze information in the early stages of legislative policy-making, are available in HeinOnline’s U.S. Congressional Documents Library. Two years ago this month, HeinOnline debuted this collection with 6,000 hearings and 1 million pages; it now has over 27,000 hearings and 6 million pages available, with hundreds more hearings being added each month! This library also includes the prestigious legislative history collections of both Arnold & Porter and Covington & Burling.

We offer a simple way to efficiently locate specific hearings with our Congressional Hearings Quick Finder. For example, if you are looking for the senate hearing from April 10, 2003 on FAA Reauthorization and you know the hearing was before the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, you would enter the following information using the fields provided and click the search button:

 

You will receive 4 results that contain hearings from the Senate before the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation during the 108th Congress that also include the phrase “FAA reauthorization”. The third result will be the April 10, 2003 hearing:

You can also use HeinOnline’s Advanced Search tool, which can be accessed by clicking the search tab and clicking on “Advanced Search” in the upper left corner.  This type of search may be used if you are searching for hearings pertaining to a particular topic, or during a specific time frame. For instance, if you would like to know whether HeinOnline has any hearings pertaining to the Clear Skies Act of 2005, you could search as follows:

For searches with a larger number of results, you will see various facets on the left of the screen that will enable you to narrow your results. For example, a search for “Patriot Act” will produce 180 results, even with a date range of 2001 to 2003 selected. If you’re interested in a certain Congress, Chamber, or Committee, you can select the appropriate facet here to view more specific results:
